The Pastoral Reason

A monumental two-volume work of fundamental importance for understanding the history and institutions of the transhumance civilisation. ‘A new work in all its parts, in which is shown the origin, the increase, the state, and all that, which belongs to the Dogana della Mena delle pecore di Puglia, as well as the instructions, statutes, and privileges, especially of the forum, by which this Dogana is governed...’. ‘The Pastoral reason’ is divided into 49 chapters, with as many paragraphs of the “Prammatica” that Stephen commented on, as well as two ‘Dissertations’ written in Latin by the author himself and printed in the same work. The first tome is dedicated to Charles VI, and the second to Viceroy D.. Louis Thomas Count of Harrach. Stefano di Stefano, a lawyer and jurist from Agnone between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, author of various treatises on jurisprudence and governor of the Royal Customs House in Foggia. After spending his adolescence in Agnone, he moved to Naples, where he cultivated both the fine arts and legal disciplines. The work that gave him fame and recognition was ‘The Pastoral Reason’, conceived on a farm not far from Naples.
