Description

Famous encyclopaedic dictionary by Voltaire (1694-1778) in the original language, published anonymously (to avoid persecution by the Church) in 1764, not in London, as stated on the title page, but in Geneva. The French intellectual's idea was to produce a light and inexpensive dictionary that would be accessible to all. The ‘Philosophical Dictionary’ is divided into entries arranged alphabetically and ‘enlightenmentally’ amended from irrational stereotypes and prejudices. The criticism of traditional religions is scathing. Only 5 copies present in Italian libraries.
