Second edition (the first was printed in 1607), ‘improved and augmented’, of the ‘Holy Bible’ by the Calvinist theologian from Lucca Giovanni Diodati (1576-1649). The ‘Diodati’ is the Bible of Italian Protestants par excellence, considered by many to be the finest Italian language version of the sacred text and one of the greatest literary masterpieces of all 17th century Europe. It is an edition of absolute prestige, refined in style, steeped in typically baroque rhetorical-linguistic preciousness (the psalms translated from Hebrew are proposed in Italian metrics), accompanied by a rich apparatus of notes, an elegant and punctual commentary, and a nimble glossary that facilitates comprehension. Giovanni Diodati (1576-1649), originally from Lucca, moved to Switzerland with his family who had converted to Calvinism. A Reformed pastor, theologian, intuitive and refined linguist, his version of the Bible was the official version of Italian Protestantism until the revision (1930) by Giovanni Luzzi.
