Description

Here is a masterpiece that bears witness to the early 16th-century recovery of the Latin classics: the monumental history of Rome (“Ab urbe condita”) by Titus Livy (59 BC - 17 AD), from the legendary founding (753 B.C.) to the death of Drusus (9 B.C.), son of Augustus. Of the 142 books of which the work was composed, books 1-10 (first decade) and 21-45 (third, fourth decade and half of the fifth) have been preserved. As for the lost books, there are the “Perìochae,” short summaries and commentaries. The present Basilean edition printed in the famous “Officina Hervagiana” of the Helvetic publisher Johann Herwagen (1497-1557), includes some of the leading European humanists of the sixteenth century, such as Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547), Sigmund Gelen (1497-1554), Henricus Glareanus (1488-1563).
