Aristotelis Stagiritae Opera

Description

Opera omnia (all works) of Aristotle in two tomes, printed in the Lyon workshop of the brothers Jean and François Frellon, famous for the high quality of its editions. The present one, produced by Jean Frellon, is considered his masterpiece. Some detailed diagrams have been specially added to make the Aristotelian text more accessible. The edition features contributions from some of the most authoritative ancient and fourteenth-century scholars, such as John Philoponus (490-570 AD), Porphyry (233-305 AD. ), Gilbert of Poitiers (1076-1154), Simon Gryner (1493-1541), Juan Luis de Vives (1492-1540), Raphael of Volterra (1451-1522), Iohannes Argyropoulos (1416-1486), Politian (1454-1494), Petrus Alcyonius (1487-1527), Theodorus Gaza (1415-1475), Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444), Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560). In the first volume, Simon Gryner's entire eulogy of Aristotle has been erased, possibly by the unknown Domenico De Ruggiero, the owner of the book (as can be seen from the ex libris on the title pages of the two tomes, in the first one there is also a date, 1755). At the top is the comment “ereticus est” (“this is heretical”), probably referred by the “Catholic” De Ruggiero to the eulogy of Aristotle, or to the person of the author of the eulogy himself, Gryner, who was not only an expert philologist, but also a well-known theologian of the Protestant Reformation.
