Description

An eighteenth-century edition in ten volumes of the opera omnia of the great sixteenth-century Toulouse jurist Jacques Cujas (Italianised as ‘Jacopo Cuiacio’, 1522-1590), a leading member of the School of the legal humanists or mos gallicus, a doctrinal movement of jurists working from the end of the Middle Ages, with the idea of composing a ‘cultured jurisprudence’ philologically linked to its Justinian roots. The penetration of the exegetical paradigm of literary humanism into the legal field changed the history of law. The fundamental objective of Cujas's studies is to restore Roman law to its original classical form, emending it from the various reworkings and interpolations that have taken place over the centuries.
